Too many waiting too long

Currently, the majority of people have been waiting longer than 16 weeks for support and over 140,000 people were waiting for an Autism assessment in England in December 2022, new NHS data has revealed. This is a 40% increase in the number of people waiting in just one year. The delays have been made worse due to staffs shortage and by the pandemic with the amount of people waiting for an Autism assessment growing by 169% from the pre-pandemic level in February 2020 of 52,000.

Diagnosis

Many (over 700,000) in the UK are autistic, but diagnosis waits are too long (over 86% wait more than 16 weeks). A diagnosis is crucial for getting help and avoiding struggles at school, work, and home.

Other issues

Autistic people face discrimination and challenges despite their talents. Understanding and acceptance vary globally. Disruptions to routines, like pandemics, can be especially difficult for them.

Autism acceptance month

April is World Autism Acceptance Month, a time to learn about Autism and celebrate its unique strengths. We're moving from finding a "cure" to embracing and supporting Autistic people, allowing them to thrive in their communities.

Review of Autism employment

Many autistic adults want to work! A collaboration is underway to identify challenges they face in getting and keeping jobs. The review will explore how workplaces can support existing staff, prepare autistic people for careers, and create a more inclusive environment.

Access to Autism training at the workplace

Public services in the UK are getting Autism training! Free online resources from health & social care departments and employment groups are helping staff better understand and support autistic adults. Bristol, Somerset, and Gloucestershire even made it mandatory in July 2023.
